چکیده

purpose : to evaluate the effects of topical sesame oil in the treatment of severe corneal alkali injury in rabbits methods : in a double-blind experiment, 30 healthy white rabbits were randomized into a sesame oil treatment group (n=15) and a control group (n=15). under general anesthesia, severe corneal alkali injuries were induced by application of 1 n sodium hydroxide for 40 seconds to the right eye of each rabbit. the sesame oil group was treated with sesame oil drops 4 times daily for 1 month. both groups received chloramphenicol eye drops, 4 times daily. daily examination with fluorescein staining and photography were performed, and details of corneal erosion and ulceration were recorded. the main outcome measure was descemetocele and perforation of the cornea. the animals were euthanized at the end of the study or earlier if corneal perforation had occurred, and the corneas were excised and fixed in 10% neutral-buffered formalin for histologic examination. results : mean time to perforation in sesame oil group was longer than control group (29.6 versus 25.5 days, respectively p=0.01). four eyes in sesame oil group and 8 eyes in control group developed descemetocele and perforation (p=0.13). extent of corneal vascularization was 66.6% in sesame oil group and 49.3% in control group (p= 0.065). conclusion : topical sesame oil seems to have beneficial effects on alkali-injured corneas. it delays corneal perforation in rabbits compared to control group.   iranian journal of ophthalmology 201224(4):52-56 © 2012 by the iranian society of ophthalmology

Evaluating the Efficacy of Topical and Subconjunctival Diclofenac in the Improvement of Corneal Alkali Burn in Rabbits

Objective- To compare the effects of topical eye-drop and subconjunctival administration of diclofenac on improvement of experimental corneal alkali wound in rabbits eyes. Design- Experimental study. Animal- fifteen rabbits. Procedures- Alkali wounds were inflicted on the central corneas of 15 rabbits which we...

Therapeutic Effects of Topical Netrin-4 Inhibits Corneal Neovascularization in Alkali-Burn Rats

Netrins are secreted molecules involved in axon guidance and angiogenesis. However, the role of netrins in the vasculature remains unclear. Netrin-4 and netrin-1 have been found to be either pro- or antiangiogenic factors. Previously, we found that netrin-1 acts as an anti-angiogenic factor in rats by inhibiting alkali burn-induced corneal neovascularization. Here, we further investigate the ef...

Inhibitory effect of polysulfated heparin endostatin on alkali burn induced corneal neovascularization in rabbits.

AIM To investigate anti-angiogenic effects of polysulfated heparin endostatin (PSH-ES) on alkali burn induced corneal neovascularization (NV) in rabbits. METHODS An alkali burn was made on rabbit corneas to induce corneal NV in the right eye of 24 rabbits. One day after burn creation, a 0.2 mL subconjunctival injection of 50 µg/mL PSH-ES, 50 µg/mL recombinant endostatin (ES), or normal saline...

Topical Timolol Inhibits Corneal Neovascularization in Rabbits

Timolol is a non-selective beta-adrenergic antagonist that is similar to propranolol. The mechanism through which these drugs act on the regression of neovascularization is largely unknown. However, it is thought that the drugs may act through vascular endothelial growth factor signaling, vasoconstriction, and vascular endothelial cell apoptosis. The aim of this study was to determine the effec...

Minocycline Inhibits Alkali Burn-Induced Corneal Neovascularization in Mice

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of minocycline on alkali burn-induced corneal neovascularization (CNV). A total of 105 mice treated with alkali burns were randomly divided into three groups to receive intraperitoneal injections of either phosphate buffered saline (PBS) or minocycline twice a day (60 mg/kg or 30 mg/kg) for 14 consecutive days. The area of CNV and corneal...

Involvement of NADPH oxidases in alkali burn-induced corneal injury

Chemical burns are a major cause of corneal injury. Oxidative stress, inflammatory responses and neovascularization after the chemical burn aggravate corneal damage, and lead to loss of vision. Although NADPH oxidases (Noxs) play a crucial role in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), the role of Noxs in chemical burn-induced corneal injury remains to be elucidated. In the present st...
